Our Challenges and Approach
Finding ways to encourage people to plant trees is challenging. Finding ways to encourage people to plant indigenous trees even more so! That is why we use a multifaceted approach that can be adapted to meet the needs of individual community members, farmer’s collectives, or an entire ecosystem such as a river bank, swamp or forest remnant. By integrating the different components of a system, we can find approaches and solutions that will benefit and protect the needs of all.
Understanding the Communities
The main source of fuel for cooking in Uganda continues to be firewood and charcoal meaning trees are in great demand which is viewed by many view as a negative consequence of poverty. At KFF however, we try to think about this use of trees positively as it gives trees a great prominence in Ugandan society and the family home which is certainly not the case in most western countries. This prominence and importance is what we hope to be able to use to develop and integrate tree planting into as many aspects of community life as possible.
